Hi,

I'm wanting to take my bow competency test at the next event. As well as obviously making sure you can hit a target, I think they ask you about the restrictions on bow use (I think it's mainly common sense stuff like don't fire at night or in wind.)

My friend seemed to think there was a PDF on the site somewhere with it all in? Just want to make sure I've got it all covered.

Thanks,

Dan

The bow comp test includes a training session beforehand to demonstrate and teach the safe use of projectiles.
There is no written document detailing the requirements and restrictions of the test, as it is not possible to set down in writing all the situations and/or conditions in which bow use is safe or unsafe. Common sense and good judgement are required and you will need to satisfy the tester that you can exercise these.

All that said, the following is a non-exhaustive list of some guidelines:
* Bows may NEVER be used as melee weapons.
* You should avoid aiming projectiles at the face or other delicate areas of the anatomy.
* Some weather conditions may make bows unusable.
* Bows should not be used indoors.
* Projectiles should not be "arched" over people in order to strike targets behind them.
* You must always follow the instructions of a Referee or Marshal with regard to use of these weapons

Rich has given a good summary, however when we complete the bow competancy we include advice, training and a safety test. As well as advice on care of your bows crossbows and arrows
Just to confirm we normally run these at 11am and 5 pm on the saturday (and Sunday ) of mainline events, outside of these times while we are usually happy to help we cannot guarentee being able to provide the test

Cheers

Ben

Hi Dan,

As an addition for you, we do have a Facebook Page where you can get advice on all sorts of archery related bits and bobs, plus if you happen to be going to a sanctioned event we can probably arrange for someone to be there to take your comp test then.

All the best

Mark Phelan

Am I correct in thinking Mongolian Style recurve bows (like these- http://classic-bow.com/c...-recurve-bows-c-22.html) are the ones that are banned?

Also, could you please remind me what the poundage limit for bows is?

Thanks,

Dan

Can't answer on the bow design.

Max draw appears to be 30 lbs.

Have a look in the weapon specs guidelines in the Publications section (I had to go via the link at the bottom of the homepage, rather than the link at the top - don't know why)

At the moment we don't ban a specific type of bow.. We do however take every weapon (bow's included) on a case by case basis...

The limit is 30lb at 26 inches draw.

Quick clarification -

I think you'll find that's 30lb draw at 28".

The Weapons Spec document (downloadable from the LT site) makes it clear that "Due to the adjustable nature of compound bows they will not be permitted. Also, Mongolian design bows are not permitted within this system."

Thanks for the additional info.

The publications page appears to be down, does anyone have a direct link to the weapons specs document, or would they be prepared to email it to me if I PM my email address?

Regards,

Dan

Publications page is working (though since the online booking went live many links changed slightly and many are no longer correct, particularly from the forums pages - the new address for the publications page is http://www.lorientrust.com/publications/ )

The weapons spec doc is here - http://www.lorientrust.com/ecMa...ust+Weapons+Specs(1).pdf
